An endeavour will be made to
carry on the work of the Survey Department and in connec-
tion with Scavenging lanes for which it was intended to
engage 3 Surveyors at $1,320. to $1,560 per annum, with
travelling allowances of $360. per annum each, as mentioned
in my despatch No. 216 of the 26th. August, 1908.
As
no candidates could be obtained for those salaries, salar-
ies of $1,680 to $2,040 were offered without success.
The present arrangement is there-
fore an economy.
